Arriving by air from UK...
Perugia Airport, just 50 mins. drive from the house, has now opened for direct flights from UK. At the moment Ryanair is the only carrier, flying from Stansted four times a week, on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check their website for details.
More generally, the chief airports with direct flights to this area, with approximate, but realistic, drive times to the house, are:
- Perugia, as indicated above, 50 mins.
- Bologna city and Bologna Forli, about 2.5 hours
- Ancona, about 2.5 hours
- Pisa, about 2.5 hours
- Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino. These two airports are at some 3.5 hours drive from the house, which is greater than from some other airports. But Rome shouldn’t be overlooked: it offers the greatest range of travel options from the greatest number of carriers, including British Airways (still some occasional bargains with them), Ryanair, Easyjet, and others. And if you want to travel mid-week, you can spend 2 or 3 days sightseeing in Rome before travelling up to Umbria at the weekend.
Arriving by air from other countries...
Rome is probably the best option to fly into. See carriers in your country for details.
If driving...
However you arrive in Italy, you will need a car to get around once here. Cars can be hired at all the above airports.
The two trunk roads passing through the area are the A1, a toll road of motorway standard about an hour to the West, and the E45, a toll free dual carriageway about 30mins. to the East. Both follow a general North-South route through the peninsula. The 1:200,000 road maps from the Touring Club of Italy are ideal for getting around by car. These, or other similar maps, will be essential for your stay.
A more detailed description how to reach the house will be provided before you arrive.
